Our Smart Canopy
Removable Cover
Climate Protection
Precision Viticulture
Between extreme weather exposure and enclosure, vineyards have long needed a third path: one that protects the harvest while keeping the vineyard in its natural conditions.
That is the promise of the Smart Canopy: seamlessly integrated into your operation, it deploys in one click to provide support when the vine’s natural balance is disrupted, then retracts and disappears until the next event.
Key benefits
A multifonction protective cover
- Shade, lower solar exposure and reduced irrigation need during summer
- Hail protection thanks to a lightweight yet resistant high-density fabric
- Frost protection by retaining heat stored in the soil during the day
- Reduced leaf wetness and less spray wash-off during heavy rainfall
Remote-controlled deployment
- Patented deployment algorithms developed with viticulture experts
- In-field sensors and real-time agriculture-weather data
- Remote deployment controlled by the farmer via its smartphone
- Only 13-19 deployments in 2024 and 2025 for optimal yields
Elegant and invisible by design
- Retracted 98% of the time inside a 22×35 cm housing integrated within the vine row
- Summer: visually disappears within the foliage. Winter: a design that echoes trellising lines
- Compatible with vineyard machinery (in 2025, all operating sequences were validated: soil work, trimming, spraying, mechanical harvest)
Robust and built to last
- 100% energy autonomous with its solar panel
- A housing designed to withstand mechanical operations (including harvesters)
- Wind resistance tested to 50 mph (beyond that, the fabric detaches)
- 90%+ recyclable materials and textiles
Simple installation, adapted to your parcel
- Reversible installation (no foundations) and non-invasive (no cabling or external electricity)
- All-terrain anchoring options installed like standard trellis posts
- Adjustable for height, fabric, and slope (up to 30%)
- A complete survey plan included as part of the pre-assessment

Pre-assessment with our team
We start by studying your most exposed parcels (training system, density, slopes, soil type, hazard history). From there, we design the right configuration (number of modules, positioning, associated services) and estimate potential gains.
Installation
- Modules and sensors installed during dormancy (October–March)
- System setup and in-person commissioning
- BIENESIS app account creation and training for confident day-to-day use
BIENESIS intelligence, day by day
- Automated weather alerts and deployment recommendations
- Scheduled deployments or manual control from the BIENESIS app
- Status confirmation messages (deployed / retracted)
- Decision rules configurable to your needs, with support from our agronomist-oenologist
Premium maintenance service
Technical monitoring, preventive maintenance, and software updates are handled directly by BIENESIS teams and our partner network. Wear parts, routine checks, and incident support are included to ensure long-term reliability.

FAQ
Is it compatible with hedging (trimming)?
Yes. The Canopy is integrated into the trellis, below hedging height and below the machine clearance zone. With the fabric retracted into its housing, mechanical work (soil work, hedging, spraying, harvester, etc.) proceeds normally.
Is this “techno-solutionism” ?
No. The Canopy is not designed to replace agronomic practices or existing adaptations. It is a complementary tool—developed with the industry—to reduce the impact of the most destructive climate events, with respect for terroirs and living systems.
Can it withstand wind ?
Yes. The Canopy continues protecting up to 50 mph, representing ~80% of hail events. Above that threshold, the fabric partially releases to eliminate wind load while staying attached to the main structure, preventing damage to the Canopy.
What is its lifespan ?
With very few cycles (13-19 deployments per season in 2024-2025) and storage inside a closed shell, the system is minimally stressed and less exposed. Estimated lifespan: 20 years for the mechanical structure, and 10+ years for fabric and electronics. BIENESIS’ proximity and in-house maintenance improve responsiveness when needed.
Is it suitable for any parcel or training system ?
Yes. The anchoring system adapts to rocky or soft soils and can be installed on slopes up to 30%. It fits trellis heights from 1.1 m to 2.2 m and a range of row spacings. A pre-assessment ensures a bespoke design for your estate.
How does the deployment algorithms work ?
Using weather forecasts, in-field sensors, and patented rules, the BIENESIS app alerts the user when a climate risk is detected (frost, hail, heat, rain). Deployments and retractions can be scheduled remotely without extra labour. The user remains in control (custom thresholds), and in sudden events the app can act automatically to protect the crop.
How does it help reduce inputs ?
For irrigation, the fabric reduces solar radiation by 90%+ and the design supports airflow, cutting evapotranspiration during heatwaves, up to 30 m³ of water/ha/day saved. Across disease and pest strategies, the algorithm optimises deployments to limit primary contamination and product wash-off, reducing inputs by 30% to 70% depending on the season, while keeping the crop connected to its natural environment (including rainfall).
Is it easy to install ?
Yes. It installs like a trellis post, with the same tools and pace. BIENESIS surveying tools optimise module count and positioning without interfering with vines. No foundations are required; anchors are reversible. For new plantings, BIENESIS Canopies can directly replace trellis posts.
Is it compatible with trellising ?
Yes. It does not interfere with the support wire; it bridges over it. Side notches accommodate trellis wires. With a 22 cm width and 35 cm depth, it integrates within the foliage wall. In new plantings, Canopies can replace posts directly.
Can it be used on other crops ?
Yes. BIENESIS technologies were developed in the most demanding environment (vineyards) and are now ready to be adapted to other specialty crops. If you want to assess compatibility with your production, contact the BIENESIS team !
